MPEG VS AVI ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

I have been having a continous debate with clients and colleagues about what is the best file type to use for individual DV files. These files are to be used for streaming as well as stand alone. I would like to know any views on which are the better files and for whta reason eg quality vs compression, file size etc

I would say Quicktime, Why because it's a beautifull format, and it also work great on other computers (Unlike some codecs used by AVI's).

Quicktime is all well and good but the file sizes on quicktime I have found to be 10x the size of an avi file. Ie when I edit into quicktime on Adobe Premiere the file size comes out enormous. Also, not all mov files can be played on all PCs particularly for the purposes of streaming. Which gets us back to the merits of avi vs mpeg. Is there a single codec that does not work on certain machines or do different codecs not work on certain machines.
